Quantity and quality are as rare and special a double act as, say, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Lennon and McCartney, or Ant and Dec. That is partly why so many retro game compilations tend to emerge a bit more like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Thankfully, Sega Mega Drive Collection is a far more enticing proposition. Offering 27 of the more popular titles to have appeared on Segas late 80s/early 90s 16-bit console (expertly converted to play identically to the originals), the range covers an impressive array of gaming experiences.

True, there are a number of members from the same family, such as three Phantasy Star titles, two Sonic The Hedgehogs, a couple of appearances for Vector Man, as well as the Golden Axe and Ecco the Dolphin trilogies. Yet these shouldnt be considered fillers – each iteration stands on its own pixellated feet.

Indeed, the Collection distinguishes itself not through the number of games it includes, but rather the number of poor games it does not.

No, unlike certain PSP compilations, Segas collection screams value. Even personally disappointing insertions such as dreary beat-em-up Altered Beast and poorly executed helicopter-based shooter Super Thunder Blade probably still have strong fan bases, and are likely to find affection from some of you. And while RPGs such as the much-loved Phantasy Star III included here seem awfully clunky by todays standards, theyre still capable of engrossing players for many, many hours.

Those who linger too long on such fare would be missing valuable play time with some of the UMDs strongest entries, however, such as the two Sonic games, the infuriatingly addictive puzzler Columns, the ninja-based platformer Shinobi III, and the pleasingly playable, non-polygonal Mega Drive version of Virtua Fighter 2.

Again, theyre personal choices. For many, this list would definitely extend to include Alex Kidd, together with one or more of the Ecco and Golden Axe games – strong titles, inarguably. But then even simpler experiences such as the delightfully colourful platformers Bonanza Bros and Flicky deliver generous and consistent levels of fun.

Tempting you to at least try all of the games is the promise of unlockable bonus and extra material, such as substantial interview footage of the developers of some of the games, trailers, and five additional games from Segas huge arcade vault (see PG Tips below). The latter is of interest to both retro gamers and those looking to catch up on history they may have been too young to witness first time around, of course, although these individuals are unlikely to be as impressed by the limited number of other additional elements from the games Museum section, which restricts itself to a brief description of each game, three tips and the box artwork.

Still, looking into the future, where modern concessions have been made they are there to better the experience. Hence opening sequences can be skipped or curtailed, the action viewed in three display modes (stretched and filled offer a larger, though lower resolution image while original keeps things razor sharp) and saved at any point, while a two-player ad-hoc mode enables co-op or competitive play on most games (only one game, side-scrolling platformer Kid Chameleon, allows alternate play for two).

But the crucial aspect of Sega Mega Drive Collection is that it will always be able to fall back on the quality of its games. For veterans, its a great opportunity to relive some old favourites while perhaps discover the odd title that may have escaped them. But ultimately, its something that all can enjoy – theres some excellent games on offer, many of them packed with utterly wonderful (and still unique) touches meaning they absolutely stand up to modern scrutiny. Graphics may age, after all, but solid game mechanics rarely do – and here, theres certainly an abundance of that.

Quality and quantity, indeed.

Mortal Kombat Unchained PSP/ENG/2006

Mortal Kombat Unchained (PSP/ENG/2006)

PSP Mortal Kombat Unchained (PSP/ENG/2006)
English | Platform: PSP | Release: November 13, 2006 | Publisher and Developed by Midway Games | 796 MB
Genre: Fighting

Looks like Mortal Kombat escaped the end of days after all on the PSP, that is. Consoles experienced the closing of the series on current gen systems with the recent release of MK: Armageddon. Instead of porting the cataclysmic battle over to Sonys handheld, Midway decided to bring over the previous installment of the franchise to the PSP with Mortal Kombat Unchained. However, while having a portable version of MK: Deception with almost every feature from the console is an impressive feat on a UMD, the games implementation of the title definitely leaves much to be desired.

Unchaineds story picks up where MK: Deadly Alliance left off, with Quan Chi and Shang Tsung successfully resurrecting the army of the fabled Dragon King before they turn on each other. Unfortunately for the two treacherous sorcerers, a nasty surprise shows up when Onaga returns to reclaim the throne of Outworld. The combined strength of Shang Tsung, Quan Chi and even Raiden working together isnt enough to dent the Dragon King, and even a desperate suicide attack from Raiden doesnt faze the beast. This, of course, leads to various characters within the MK universe fighting it out, each attempting to eliminate Onaga for their own personal reasons.

While the plot of Unchained hasnt changed since 2004, the roster of the game has been boosted for the PSP version. Along with Goro and Shao Kahn (who were included for the Gamecube version of Deception), players can also choose to fight as Kitana, Jax, Frost or Blaze. Just like the console version of the game, characters have different fighting stances that they can use in battle, as well as weapons that they can break out to cause additional damage. All of your characters have special attacks as well, and players will be able to chain together attacks and even string large combos by switching between stances quickly. Of course, getting continually juggled by an opponent skilled in combos can be extremely frustrating for any fighting fan. Fortunately, the combo breaker system that was included in Deception has been included in Unchained, so you can interrupt long dial a combo strings. Unchained also includes the various multi tiered levels and death traps that made Deception a stand out on the console.

On top of the fighting system, Unchained also brings over the various game modes that were included in Deception. Puzzle Kombat is a mini game in the vein of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, complete with deformed characters and special attacks. Chess Kombat, on the other hand, takes the basic concept of a chess game and turns it on its head. Much more like Archon than anything, pieces literally fight each other to determine who takes a square on a chess board. Konquest is a separate adventure mode that tells the history of Shujinko, a young man in the MK Universe whose actions directly influence the plot behind Onagas return in Unchained. Finally, the Krypt holds a number of archived secrets and bonus materials, ranging from alternate costumes and artwork to movies. This is joined by a new Endurance mode, which pits you against a never ending stream of enemies.
